The Lonely Ant

Written 1/27/15

The Lonely Ant
by Evangeline Dollahon

The lonely ant felt helpless
As he watched atop his stone.
“Don’t all ants need companions,
as they never walk alone?

The other ants are stronger,
they hold their heads so high.
Their antennae are skyscrapers
Reaching towards the sky.”

The Queen would watch them march,
A frown upon her face -
Unimpressed by obedience,
Unfazed by mistakes.

“Nobody is perfect,”
she told the ant one day.
“Kindness beats perfection,
No matter what they say.”

“Each creature feels defeated
At one time or another.
As long as you keep smiling,
All things will get better.”

The ant looked up thoughtfully,
Took what she said to heart.
“I will strive to do my best,
I will always do my part.”
