The Giraffe and The Mouse
Mouse climbed the acacia tree every day,
To see what his friend Giraffe had to say.
He would talk to Mouse about many things,
Shoe laces, houses and apron strings.
As he talked about things that he saw from up high,
Mouse envied his long neck and watchful eye.
Giraffe told Mouse about the wonderful view,
The cars, the trees and the ocean blue.
One day Mouse decided once and for all,
that he would feel what it was like to be tall!
So while Giraffe was sound asleep,
Mouse quickly scurried up his large feet.
He would climb and climb till he got to the top!
But once he got to his neck - he jerked to a stop.
For when he looked down, he realized why
he had never before given this a try!
Anticipation soon turned into fright
For Mouse had forgotten his great fear of height!
He couldn’t get down; he was stuck up there,
So he pulled on Giraffe’s yellow brown hair.
Slowly Giraffe opened his kind brown eyes,
and looked down at mouse with utter surprise.
Noticing Mouse’s sad, guilty face,
he realized his friend had made a mistake!
“Giraffe,” squeaked Mouse, “I envied you so,
I wanted to see for myself what you know!
You talk about such glorious things,
I wanted your eyes, if you know what I mean!”
Giraffe felt honored, very beguiled.
He gazed about and kindly smiled.
“Up here you can look for miles around,
But maybe it’s best that you stay on the ground.”
He looked at Mouse with sympathy.
He understood his jealousy.
Giraffe was not mad at Mouse at all
For he’d always wanted to be small!
Now Giraffe knew it was his time to confess,
“Dear Mouse,” he cried, “it is you who is blessed!
You see the sky and trees from a different perspective!
You can scurry and hide without being detected!”
Surprised, the two friends stared at each other,
Then suddenly they burst into laughter!
Realizing how silly it is
To look at your friend and want what is his!
“Envy in friendship only leads to distance!
I adore you because we both are so different!
I will leave it to you to share what you see,”
“Same here!” said Giraffe as he set him down gently.
